HOW CAN I TELL PIRATED ANIMATIONS?

September 20th, 2008

Before buying an animated piece of furniture, edit it, and go to the contents tab. The details may take a minute or two to come up.  Look for any of these animations in the product. If a set of animations similar to this one (it may vary from time to time) is in the object, chances are you are being sold pirated animations that the furniture maker bought for a pittance. You should IM the creators listed below and let them know. It’s important to support SL’s content creators!!

Note: some furniture makers (though they are a decided minority) decided to get legal and actually purchase licences for the animations, after they learnt they were using stolen goods. (More power to them!)

Some have commented that some of these animations can be purchased, and so that this list is invalid. At the time of this pirated kit’s release, only the animations by Craig Altman were being sold full perm. The ones by Johan Durant, Nytemyst Grace and Parsalin Gullwing were not being sold at all at the time.

Since then, Nytemyst has made licences for the full perm animations available for vendors at her store.

If you are a maker of products and are using these animations,  here is how you can get legal:

(1) go to Bits and Bobs, and acquire a licence for the items by purchasing them right in the store;

(2) Join Nytemyst Grace’s animation group, and once approved, purchase the animations right in her store;

(3) Johan Durant and Parsalin Gullwing still *do not* sell any of their animations full perm to furniture makers, including any of those listed below. (As of 2 Oct 2008, Johan’s profile still says “Sorry, I’m not available for custom work, nor do I sell full-perms copies of my animations.”) However, they will make an exception for the animations listed below in that they will licence them to people using them who wish to transform the status of those animations into legally-licenced ones. Contact them directly.

If a furniture maker has contacted Parsalin Gullwing and got a licence for the animations by him listed below, the animations will be no modify, and have the licencee name in their description line. You may also see in the prim’s content a notecard from Parsalin certifying the licence. If, however, the animations just say “For Resell”, then the furniture maker has not arranged licencing for the animations by him and they are being used illegally.

The animators keep a full detailed list of everyone who has approached them to get legal. It is sadly not a long list at all, so they will easily be able to verify furniture maker names for you.

Animations: Which are public-domain, which are not?

September 15th, 2008

Beginning furniture makers or experimenters often don’t have the money and / or confidence yet to invest in buying licenced animations.

We all know from the June 2008 Eva Capalini episode what can ensue when what appear to be “bargain-priced” licenced animations fall into their hands.

I’m trying to make a list of animations that float around in freebie circles (such as Yadni’s) that they generally can count on to be legitimately free, unpirated animations for them to use without being bitten in the arse one day for having done so.

Here’s my list so far, and my thoughts. Any contributions / corrections / etc appreciated.

[1] if you see these animations being used by anyone but them, they are likely pirated.

[2] You need to check with these animators when free stuff created by them comes into your hands.

[3] These people released some stuff as freebies in the distant past, but now only produce animations for their own use, and never licence any of these current ones out.

[4] An effort was made at clarification but no real determination of status was possible owing to the accounts having been deleted from SL. Use at your own risk.
